Last, Shoe
Shoe last, Canterbury, NH
Description
Wood block cut in the form of a shoe. The last has an almond-shaped toe, from which the height of the last increases toward the instep then plateaus at top. Below the top there is a through-hole 1/4" in diameter with a plaster-like substance inside. The substance blocks one side of the hole completely and is drilled through at the center of the other. From the top the heel curve extends 2 5/8" to the seat. The seat's sides are curved to form the waist. On either side of the waist there is a strip of leather nailed. The seat widens from the waist to the joint and then tapers toward the toe. The seat has numerous nail holes which follow the last's outline.
