Object ID:

Community:
New Hampshire, Canterbury
Description

Carrier for delivery of baked beans prepared for sale by the Shakers. Peaked roof structure covered on sides with asphalt shingles in a red brick pattern. On front are three doors; two vertical and one horizontal along the bottom. Inside are four large removable trays to hold the bean pots. In black on left vertical door, "Shaker / Brick Oven / Baked Beans." In red letters outlined in black on the sign along the roof ridge, "Shaker Brick Oven Baked Beans." On the right door are facsimiles of the iron doors of the real brick oven painted on in black.

Notes

The carrier would have been set into a wagon and used to distribute beans throughout the countryside around Canterbury. The carrier was probably in use throughout the 1940s and then placed in storage.
