Basket form, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
White pine, rectangular basket mold. Bottom is 6 1/4" x 11 7/16", flat, and has a hole 13/16" in diameter in its center. The corners are rounded. Tapers upward 4 1/4" to a flat top, to which is glued, nailed, and screwed a 1/2" piece of white pined, relieved from either end to a 3/16" to 1/4" thick center. Owing to heavy use, some pin holes in the mold top are plugged with shoe pegs to extend the molds useful life. This mold offers another instance of a possible refurbishment to allow the mold to continue to be used after its top became too macerated by pine holes to be used further. The top of the mold may have been sawn or planed off to eliminated the macerated wood, and a new top glued and screwed on. Nearly illegible script at the bottom of the end near the accession number reads: "Jr. 2 H..."
