Chair, Rocking
Rocking chair of bird's-eye maple with rush seat, marked "18," Canterbury, NH
Description
Armless rocking chair of maple with rush seat. Chair originally was a side chair with tilters but at some time, legs were cut back a bit (most of tilter sockets are still extant) and slotted. Maple rocker blades were installed and secured with wood screws. Posts and some stretchers are bird's-eye / curly maple. Chair has been refinished, and rush seat is a replacement.
Notes
This chair is very similar to another in the museum's collection (1955.7850.1); they were probably made by the same craftsman. The stamp of "18" refers to the number of the room in which the chair belonged. The back is higher than that of the other chair, suggesting it was made for the use of a brother.
