Basket used by Sister Emma J. Neale, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Rectangular base to flared oval rim. Black ash splint. Uprights 1/4" wide and weavers 5/8" wide. Rim has single lashing. Fixed, single-notch, bonnet shaped handle that comes down on the interior. Base is plain-weave tight with splints that are 1/4" wide.
Notes
Originally owned by Sister Emma J. Neale. When acquired, it had attached to the handle a handwritten tag reading, “Letters in this basket to be examined,” suggesting a possible use in the Office. Sister Emma was a trustee for the Shaker Society for many years, and conducted its financial affairs including the sale of the Church Family property in 1930.
