Palm, Sailmaker's

Description

Sailmaker's palm used like a thimble during the shoemaking process. The leather is cut in a crescent shape. One end has a metal buckle and the other end loops to fasten the palm to the users hand. Next to the loops is a semi-circular cut-out meant for the users thumb. The thumb-hole shows signs of repair evident through the tacking of two small strips of leather, which maintain the thumb-hole. At the center of the palm there is a raised donut-shaped piece of leather with a dented metal piece at its center. The metal pieces depression shows concentric circles extending outward from the center. On the back of the palm there is visible stitching in the leather to attached the buckle and "donut" to the greater piece.
