Description

Three-piece cast iron wood burning stove. Base (a) with four legs and circular hearth; fire box (b); and door (c) with iron latch bar and intact draft door. Smoke vent rectangular.

Notes

This wood-burning stove was originally fitted with a secondary burning chamber, now called a super-heater, that connected to the back of the stove box’s rectangular smoke vent. In its absence, a stove pipe was fabricated to fit directly on this vent. When it had a super-heater it would have had a typical round smoke vent exiting the super-heater at the front of the stove. The purposed of this extra chamber was to burn off combustible gases being carried out of the stove with the smoke. The intention was more efficient use of wood. Stoves of this size were designed to heat a single room. In larger rooms two or more of these stoves may have been used. The stove pipe was probably not made and used by the Shakers.
