Box, Storage
Oval box with natural finish, attributed to Harvard, MA
ca. 1829
Description
Sugar maple rims, white pine headers, iron tacks, and ash or chestnut pegs. The wood appears to have a natural finish. The center line of tacks on the box rim is scored, but not on the lid. There is a single swallow tail on both the box and the lid.
Notes
According to the Hingham, MA library, repository of the Sprague Family papers, a William Sprague settled in Salem, MA from England in 1629, and moved to Hingham in 1636, where his descendents remained for centuries. A David Sprague (1780-1849) married Mary "Molly" Leavitt Gardner (1786-1862) in 1809, and they had two children; perhaps the box belonged to Molly or one of their children.
