Native American-made black ash splint basket with lid, Sabbathday Lake, ME
Description
Circular, light-colored black ash splint basket. Single-lashed rim with 1" diameter lashed wood circle attached to each side. 3/8" wide uprights; 1/8" wide weavers. Rope-pattern sweet grass woven into top 5/8" and bottom 1 1/4" of basket. 3 1/8" diameter split upright in base. Straw wraps around lid rim to hold lid in place. 1 1/8" diameter split upright in center of basket and rope-pattern sweet grass woven into 7/8" of rim, cross-lashing. Lid does not come off the basket. 1/2" wide braided sweet grass handle woven to the sides of the exterior.
