Painting
Shaker Meeting-House 1792, by Sister Cora Helena Sarle, Canterbury, NH
1951
Description
Oil on board. Painting is round and matted with a fabric covered mat with a circular opening in center. Frame is a shadow-box type, probably ash painted red and glazed with an off-white color.
Notes
The painting was made in response to a request made by Shaker Museum curator Phelps Clawson. In a letter dated January 31, 1951, Eldress Emma B. King wrote,"It will be all right as far as we are concerned for Sister Helena Sarle, our 84 year old artist, to furnish it if she is equal to the task.... If she retains her faculties and is physically equal she will be glad to make an oil painting of the Old Church and sign it. We will try to find a picture of it in its earlier setting surrounded by a picket fence."
