Oval carrier with lid, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Steam-bent maple carrier (a) bands with four swallow tails secured with copper tacks (tack arrangement more like Canterbury, NH, than Mount Lebanon, NY). White pine top and bottom headers held by copper shoe pegs, supplanted with copper tacks. Steam-bent hickory fixed handle riveted and tacked to outsides. With lid (b). Insides of top and bottom headers painted a creamy yellow. Exterior varnish over reddish wash or stain.
Notes
Unlike carrier 1950.347.1, this carrier is fitted with a hickory strip under the handle ends whose thickness increases upward to each side and to which the handle itself is fastened; this permits the lid to fit securely to the top. When acquired, it contained assorted sizes of corks, mostly unused. Originally the paper label on the lid read "CORKS" but the label has mostly worn off and it is no longer legible.
