Foot treadle lathe, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Shaker-made foot lathe, composite of parts from different lathes. Overhead wooden flywheel (31 1/4") and drive pulley assembly with handles, lathe ways, and 2 1/2' wide heavy wooden foot treadle are old (pre 1820). Castings look newer and do not seem to fit ways (wood clamps on which they are mounted do not extend to edge of ways as on lathe 1950.1117.1. Legs look like modern pine lumber, probably attached after lathe acquired by museum (per Jerry Grant) Set up with face plate, tail stock, and rest.
