Commercial jigsaw modified by the Shakers, used at Hancock, MA

1899

Object ID:

Community:
Massachusetts, Hancock
Description

Small, foot-powered jigsaw with a laminated table. Commercially made except for the hardware on the arm which is hand-forged, possibly a Shaker modification. Unused gear on the drive shaft also indicates some modification. Half-round drawer under the table top containing twelve saws or saw parts. Originally painted red, crudely lined and decorated in yellow; much of the paint still remains. "DICK CHAMPION" is painted on the ride side under the table top overhang. "SAWS" is marked on the drawer. "Mar 10, 1899" is painted in yellow on the front base.
