Description

Steam-bent maple oval box (a) and lid (b) rims. Three swallow-tails on the box and one on the lid, secured with copper tacks. White pine headers held by copper points. Exterior clear coated, possibly with varnish. Ball-point pen script on the bottom, "Shaker Settlement / Mount Lebanon, NY". Ball-point pen script on the inside: "Shaker' settlement of / Mount Lebanon, NY / Catherine + Phoebe Van Houten / Born ____ Died 1894 + 1896".

Notes

The inside of the box was inscribed by the donor, who was a distant relative of Shaker sisters (and biological twins) Catherine and Phoebe Van Houten. One of the twins likely gave the box to the donor.
