Oval box painted olive green, Mount Lebanon, NY
1830-1860
Description
Maple oval box (a) and lid (b). Four swallow-tails on the box, and one on the lid, all secured with copper tacks. Tulip poplar headers held in place with copper points. Exterior painted olive green; interior unfinished. This box is a #2 box size in an eleven box series. This inside of the lid has "E" written in pencil, and what may be a trace of an "N" and "43".
Notes
The box has slight evidence of machine marks that may indicate production after 1830. Tack placement is not consistent with boxes from the mid-1800s, so it was either made in early 1830-1840, or later in 1870-1880.
