Yarn or thread winder used by Sister Emma J. Neale, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY

Object ID:

Description

Yarn or thread winder of cherry. A handled gear wheel with cogs made using short pieces of dowel glued into holes around outside of inner face. These dowels engage cogs on a conventional gear wheel such that by turning handled wheel, the gear turns the shaft to which it is attached. At the opposite end of the shaft, two plates are attached with tapered cylinders attached across each pair of corners forming a reel upon which yarn or thread could be wound. The base is supported by three short peg legs. Between the legs, a heavy block of cherry is screwed to the underside of the base for added stability.
