Description

Volume III, No. 8 of The American Socialist, published February 21, 1878. On the front page is an illustration captioned, "The Shaker Village at Mount Lebanon, N.Y." The engraving shows the North Family of Mount Lebanon as seen from the Great Stone Barn looking south; the meetinghouse and other Church Family buildings can be seen in the background. It is based upon a photograph taken by James Irving. The paragraph of text describes the Shaker society in admiring terms, and notes that the illustration is printed from a plate made for a publication on American Communities.

Notes

The American Socialist was published by the Oneida communal society; the editor, Noyes, was the founder of the society.
