Description

Pages 213-214 from The Manufacturer and Builder, September 1891. Features an article titled "Communism-Shakerism," by C. R. Edson, part IX of a series. On page 213 at upper center is an engraving captioned "Shaker Village of Watervliet, N.Y." Below is a larger image captioned "Mt. Lebanon (N. Y.) Church Family." The text gives the history of Mother Ann and the first Shakers from the time of their release from jail in 1780 to the building of the first meetinghouse at Mount Lebanon and the assumption of leadership by Father James Whittaker.
