Pages 457-458 of Harper's Weekly published June 20, 1891, featuring a fictional essay titled "A Shaker Wooing," by Eva Wilder McGlasson. At upper left of page 457 is an engraving by Charles Howard Johnson which shows a young sister sweeping the ground near a pair of trees and a gated stone and brick wall. The story describes two young Shakers named Rose Trapp and James Henry Hoggins forming a romantic attachment and deciding to leave the community to marry. The setting of the story is the East Family of a community identified only as Shakertown, Kentucky.
