Description

Pages 859 - 862 from the October 27, 1894 issue of Harper's Bazar. On page 859 is a brief essay, "The Shaker Community at Mount Lebanon," and on page 861 are four photographs titled "Life in the Shaker Community at Mount Lebanon, New York." The photo at upper left shows two sisters carrying a large basket down a path, captioned "View of Houses and Laundry." At upper right, the photo is captioned "Shaker Sisters in the Laundry" and shows five sisters folding and ironing linens and a little girl seated at right. The photo at lower left, captioned, "Weaving Straw Mats," shows a young sister and three girls in a workshop; two weave straw at looms, one girl carries a bundle of straw and a seated little girl sews. At lower right, the photo captioned "Making Garments" shows two girls sewing, a sister using a sewing machine, and a sister at the rear who appears to be mending a rug.
