Description

Vol. CXV No. 2989 issue of Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper. On page 639, at the lower left, is a photograph titled "A Shaker Settlement Disbanded," commemorating the closure of the Union Village, OH community. The photograph shows Brother Leopold Goepper standing before an open automobile in which five sisters are seated. The caption notes that Brother Leopold at 88 was the oldest and brother George Baxter at age 51 was the youngest of the seventeen remaining Shakers. The property was sold to the United Brethren Church for $325,000, and the Shakers retained the right to live on the property for ten more years.
