Shakers at Meeting. The Final Procession.
May 14, 1870
Description
Illustration, "Shakers at Meeting. The Final Procession," published on May 14, 1870, in The Graphic. The illustration shows the Shakers performing the final exercise of the religious meeting, which took place in the meeting room of the dwelling house of the North Family, Mount Lebanon. In the foreground are pairs of sisters and a group of little girls walking with upraised hands in a circular line. To their rear, at the right, are pairs of brothers, led at the foreground by Elder Frederick W. Evans, whose features and clothing are rendered much more distinctively than the rest of the figures. In the background are circles of additional Shakers. The image was made by Houghton when he visited the North Family in December of 1869, as part of the series "Graphic America."
