Chair, Rocking
#6 production rocking chair carved by Brother William Perkins, Mount Lebanon, NY
ca. 1880
Description
#6 production rocking chair of maple stained brown. Shawl rail at the top, and mushroom hand-holds on the arms. Two turned stretchers each on the front and sides, and a single stretcher on the back. Rocker blades inserted into the bottoms of the legs. Front rails are vase-turned at the seat. The back and seat are covered with red wool twill tape in a twill weave. There is a faded gold decal on the inside of the right rocker. The area around the decal is darker, indicating that the chair has been refinished. Carved into the back of the top slat is "June 1921" in block lettering and "WS" in overlapping letters set in a circle with a mottled background.
Notes
"WS" is believed to refer to Elder Walter Shepherd, who became first in the Ministry in 1919. Based on the strong similarity of the carving to those on a bench and two oval boxes in the museum's collection, it is believed to have been done by Brother William Perkins. The significance of the date, June 1921, is not known.
