Beam
Beam from a press, Tyringham, MA
Description
Timber of maple (probably red maple, Acer rubrum) with fittings for two press screws. Double tenons on each end. 3 1/4 x 21 3/8 x 23 1/8" at one end, 3 1/4 x 21 3/8 x 20 1/2 at other. Each tenon has two through mortises for removable locking tenons. Four wrought, threaded rods are inserted through the timber at a right angle to the axis of the screw press holes and each end is secured with a wrought square nut and washer. The arrises are chamfered, in effect, by wane from the original tree.
Notes
Salvaged from the "Red Mill" at Tyringham, which was then collapsing; the building was originally a sawmill and barrel-making facility.
