Tray

ca. 1835

Object ID:
1961.12840.2
Community:
New York, Mount Lebanon
Description

Roughly made tray of white pine (Pinus strobus), with basswood (Tilia americana) dividers, two small pieces of leather and iron nails. Tray was attached to a harness maker's vise by two flat head steel wood screws that are no longer with the tray.

Notes

Used to hold tools and parts at the harness maker's bench (1961.12840.1). The tray was removed at some point from the bench, perhaps for the 1986 exhibition on Shaker design held at the Whitney Museum, for which the bench was displayed and photographed for the catalogue without the tray. The tray was reattached to the bench using two steel flat head screws from a group of unaccessioned screws, bolts, and other hardware.
