Object ID:

Community:
Massachusetts, Hancock
Description

A hank of cane which is split from the outer shell of rattan vines, a vining palm in the genus Calamus.

Notes

In addition to cane seats woven in chairs, this material was also used to make Nantucket Lightship baskets. Baskets of any sort woven with the rough inner surface of the rattan exposed are reminiscent in appearance to ash baskets.
