Flax wheel stamped "SR", Alfred, ME
Description
Flax wheel with table and wheel felloes of red oak (Quercus rubra), and legs, wheel support posts, treadle, tensioning knob and screws, wheel spokes and hub, and spinning head holder of maple (Acer spp.). The spinning head has a steel axle, a maple (Acer spp.) spool, and pulley but with a red oak shaft. The drive bar was connected to the treadle by a leather thong but this has disintegrated. The spinning head is attached to its supports by leather tabs which are still intact but very brittle. The bar connecting the treadle and the wheel axle is beech (Fagus gradifolia).
