Mold
Form for strawberry emeries, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Block of maple (probably Acer saccharum) with nine conical depressions in top. One is 1 1/16" dia., four are 7/8" diameter, and four are 3/4" diameter, all about 5/8" deep. One such hole in the bottom, 1 1/4" dia. and 13/16" deep, and a 5/8" dia. hole in one side for mounting.
Notes
Used to make the emery "strawberries" placed in sewing boxes and carriers. Jerry Grant speculates that the mold may have been fashioned from the end of a jointer plane. The position and appearance of the initials "ZW" on one face are similar to those found on some other planes in the museum's collection.
