Description

This photograph was taken from the side of the hills west of the Shakers Swamp looking to the east over the Canaan Valley and what is now New York State Route 22. In the distance the Shaker Village is visible. From left to right the North Family buildings can be seen with its distinctive Great Stone Barn with its circa 1880 gable roof. To its right only a glimpse of the Church Family buildings can be seen followed further to the right by the Center Family buildings and still further on the Second Family. Just below the mid-point between the Center and Second Families, and along what is now called Ann Lee Lane (it was probably called the Mill Road by the Shakers since it once connected the Church Family with their Stone Grist Mill that still stands along Route 22), is a small group of buildings -- dwellings and barns -- that the Shakers provided for their hired men.
