Wheelwright's setting stone, Hancock, MA
Description
Wheelwright's setting stone. Circular marble stone with central through-hole, 18 5/8" in diameter.
Notes
Used by wheelwrights as a stand to set wheels. The wooden wheel was set on it with the hub down in the center hole; the iron tire, while still hot, was set over the wheel and doused with water to shrink it on, and then nailed in place.
