Description

A hanging brass oil lamp painted a red-brown (a,). The lamp is rounded (a) with a brass band around the middle, which attaches the hanger to the lamp. The band has a repeating decorative motif of scrolls joined to form a horizontal heart shape, with a shell sitting inside the scrolls directed toward the point of the heart. Visible underneath the band is a flat brass plate. Above the band is a another decorative motif comprising acanthus leaves, s- and c- curves, a fleur-de-lis, and a flowering column. This decorative border transitions to the top which is molded to have concave grooves. There are two vertical loops attached on either side of the top edge. To the ring of one of these loops is a mechanism enclosed in a small box with a protruding rod with a disk-shaped knob on the end. When the knob is turned a small piece of metal moves up and down outside of the mechanism's box. Between the two loops is a fuel gage. At the center is a perforated cylinder atop which sits a cast iron fire spreader (b). Inside the cylinder are three cylinders of brass set inside one another. Within the smallest cylinder is a piece of metal folded like a ribbon. The arms of the hanger shoot away from the lamp at an upward angle, bend to continue straight until curving in to their original distance apart, and then slowly tapering inward to round off and meet in the middle. At the top is there is a hanging hook for a smoke bell and a ring above it for hanging purposes.
