Chest of Drawers
Case of 12 labeled drawers, Canterbury, NH
Description
Chest on rollers with twelve drawers. The counter sits on three sets of two rollers, one set on each end and one in the middle. The rollers allow the counter to move forward and backward only. The rollers are encased by the sides of the counter which are butt-jointed. The backside is spline-jointed back. There are four columns of three drawers. Each drawer has two numbers on it, one above each drawer pull. The drawer pulls are turned knobs stained dark brown. The drawers are divided in half depth-wise, though divider is missing in drawer "7/8". "16" is also divided in half width-wise. The exterior is stained a red-brown.
Notes
Original accession information states, "Used by the Sisters to store clothes, etc". Given the number labels, perhaps each half drawer corresponded to a retiring room in the dwelling house, in which case the drawers may have been used to store bed linens or window or wall coverings. It may also have been used to store out of season clothing belonging to the inhabitants of each room.
