Description

Balance scale with a 2 1/8" x 12 1/8" x 14 3/16" pine base, a 2 x 2 1/4" standard mortised through the base that extends 24" above base. The top of the standard is slotted to accept a 7/8" x 1 7/8" x 36" balance beam which pivots on a square-headed nut and bolt inserted through the standard and balance beam center. The balance beam supports pans of pine for weighing at either end. The pans have crossed bent wood arches through-tenoned in each corner of each pan. The arch supports are secured to the beam with fence staples; one driven into the underside of the beam and another looped through the upper staple and driven down through the crossed arches and clinched. Base and pans are white pine (Pinus strobus) while the standard, beam, and arches are white ash (Fraxinus americana). Painted red.
