An octagonal maple rod (worked from a sapling, pith streak centered in red cross-section), capped at each end with brass. The eight faces correspond to timber widths of 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15", and numbers along each face give the board foot content for a square timber of the corresponding length.
