Basket
Basket used in the medicine department, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Black ash splint basket, rectangular base to softer rectangular rim. Dark brown in color. Double lashing on rim. Bonnet-shaped handle (either end attached to short sides of basket) that comes down on inside. Base is plain, loose weave and has three cleats on exterior bottom that extend for length of basket. Two rectangular pieces of wood (about 9 1/2" x 5 3/4") carved to echo the shame of the basket, are 5" from either short end of basket, creating three compartments. The wood partitions are held in place by two wood dowels that are drilled through the top and middle parts of wood and ends of basket. The sides of the partitions are held to sides of baskets by two leather ties on each side which are pulled through the basket and tied in a knot on exterior of basket.
Notes
