Bowl, Mixing
Yellow and white bowl, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Face-turned bowl of ring-porous hardwood (ash). Although grain orientation was perpendicular to the axis of rotation in turning, this bowl was turned between centers and the center core required to engage the centers was manually removed after most of the bowl was turned to shape. Thus the non-circular tool marks on the inside and outside bottom. Bowl has been painted yellow outside and white inside.
Notes
Bowls painted white are believed to have been used in dairying.
