Saw-Set
Saw-set, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Commercial saw-set of steel, brass, and cherry. A rectangular cross-section steel shaft is set into a between-centers turned cherry handle with a brass ferrule. This shaft is cast or machined such that the working end of the shaft is angled about 45 degrees from axis of shaft in handle. A brass sleeve encircles the shaft portion in line with the handle as well as an adjustable section of steel with the same cross-section as the shaft. This apparently serves as a vise jaw to hold the toothed edge of the saw blade. A steel thumbscrew threaded through this jaw is turned to bend, i.e. "set" a saw tooth. At the end of the angled shaft, another thumbscrew holds the back edge of the saw blade.
