High chair with tape seat, ca. 1880, Mount Lebanon, NY

Description
High chair constructed of birch and stained. Chair was modified and later restored, which included adding 4 5/8" to bottoms of legs to make chair its original height, adding a foot rest (according to accession card, chair originally did not have a foot rest) and refinishing and rebottoming the chair with white wool seat tape as acquired by the Shakers that was dyed red and black by C. W. Upton, the seat tape donor. Legs are nicely turned and bent, back has two slats, arms are through tenoned to front posts with mushroom caps over the protruding tenons.
