Warmer, Foot
Foot warmer, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Light-blue/cream-colored porcelain bed/foot warmer. The warmer has a half-moon shape. The curved side has a wavy/scalloped edge which continues relatively straight up and then curves in toward the top. The other side of the base is hollowed out into two convex sections. The side is angled toward the top, where it meets the curved scalloped edge. In the center of the top there is a sport with a 15/16" wide mouth. Set inside the mouth is a cork stopper.
Notes
This object was initially identified and cataloged as a bed warmer but in fact it is a foot warmer. Glazed earthenware foot warmers that were made by the Bennington Pottery in the mid- and late-19th century can be found in antique markets today. It is believed that they were filled with hot sand and placed in the bed of a carriage or sleigh for riders to place their feet against.
