Last, Shoe
Shoe last, Canterbury, NH
Description
Wood block cut in the form of a shoe. The shoe last has an almond-shaped toe, from which the height of the last increases toward the instep. Following the instep is a flat oval top with a scratched inscription. 7/16" below the top is a through-hole 1/4" in diameter. From the top of the last the heel curve extends 2 1/2" to the seat. The seat continues straight toward the forepart of the last where it widens at the joint, then tapers to form the toe. The side of the forepart has a piece of leather attached, secured by small wooden pegs. The opposite side has no leather, but an outline of where one was. Small wooden pegs remain.
