Description

The land rises quickly as the road leaves the Mount Lebanon South Family and ascends over the mountain to Massachusetts. This provided an overview of the whole of the Shaker Village and the Lebanon Valley beyond. From this place, Irving captured all but the South Family buildings in one photograph. In the foreground is a South Family garden with the road to the Canaan families (now Chair Factory Road) crossing above it. Slightly to the left are the Second Family buildings -- their Cow Barn, the Wood House/Wash House (1846), Stone Sisters Workshop and a glimpse of the Dwelling peeking over the top of the Sisters Workshop. Further on the large flat-roof block of a building is the Center Family Dwelling (1868) with the medicine shops to the right and their Cow Barn (1853) directly across the road to the left. A few Church Family buildings are visible, but the last building in the view is the North Family's Great Stone Barn (1859).
