"Mt. Lebanon, N. Y. Road to New Lebanon - Lower - Road to Lebanon Springs -- Upper -- Guide-Board Elm"
Description
The "Guide-Board" elm tree stood at the intersection of what is now Shaker Road and Darrow Road. The sign mounted on the tree gave direction and mileage to Pittsfield, Lenox, Williamstown, and Stockbridge, MA, and to Albany and Lebanon Springs, NY. In the background are North Family buildings including the First Dwelling, the Brick Shop (i.e., Brethren's Workshop), the Lumber Shed, and the Wood House (1849) (i.e., Forge). The photograph also shows a large quantity of wood piled by the Brick Shop waiting to be cut to length for firewood for the North Family. The title is taken from a manuscript note on the back of the card in Henry Clough's handwriting. The card also bears Clough's distinctive monogram.
