Description

Three North Family Sisters posing in the Eldress' sewing room. Eldress Anna White (1831-1910) and Sister Martha Jane Anderson (1844-1897) are seated and Sister Grace Bowers (1863-1905) is standing between them. The room has sewing tools and materials on work tables. Martha Anderson appears to be knitting. The photograph above Grace Bowers head appears to be a well known portrait of Elder Richard Bushnell. [In noc010778 it is easier to identify that the portrait is of Bushnell than it is in this print.] Through the door in the center of the image, a chair, hanging upside-down, apparently from peg rail, is one of the few images showing that the Shakers did, however occasionally, hang chairs from pegs.
