Inscribed on the back, "Tan-House," and the initials "W. P." indicating that it was connected to the West Pittsfield Shakers as it was. The building still stands at Hancock Shaker Village where it had once housed tanning vats and room to prepare hides for tanning. Later it was converted to a cider press and a small forge in the cellar.
