Description

Arthur Koepp, standing on the ground with his back to the camera provided the following information about this photograph. He, his sister Helen Koepp (standing behind the baler), and his brother Kenneth Koepp (standing on the baler) were baling what was, in September, 1947, the last hay raised at the North Family Shakers while there were still Shakers in residence. Helen, the youngest of the Koepp children was feeding wire into the baler to keep it from tangling. Arthur, the oldest of the Koepps at this time, 2019 will turn 102 in January, 2020. The hay baler, made by the John Deere company was probably similar to the one shown in the third image in this record. For a youtube video of such a baler in operation see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1meDvEGAY8&t=2s. Although, this machine is being used to bale straw and not hay.
