Looking South from the Roof of the the Great Stone Barn, North Family, Mount Lebanon, NY

Description
This view taken looking to the south from the roof of the Great Stone Barn can be dated by two events. On April 28, 1871, the North Family journal records, "Paint all our buildings this season at a cost of about 1200.00," and on September 15, 1873, the journal notes, "Remove Cupolas from Granary & Horse Barn." [source (for both): NN, Shaker Collection, mss. no. 20] On the north end of the Upper Dwelling a section of suspended scaffolding (or a pick) can be seen at about mid-way up the side of the Dwelling, suggesting that painters may be at work on the Dwelling. The Granary (1838), the first building in the center of the image still has its cupola suggesting that the image pre-dates September, 1873.
