Description

Written on the back of the postcard is a note from "Your sister Lillian." This is probably Lillian Barlow, a member of the Second Family Shakers. The card is unclearly postmarked, but appears to bear the cancellation stamp of "JUL 10 1908." The card is addressed to "Alice Cary Wade | c/o H. T. Clough, Glenridge, N. J." This is Henry Terry Clough, once a Shaker brother who left the society and married a Shaker sister, Julia (Mintie or Minta) Dalton. In 1909, Clough and his wife returned to Mount Lebanon to work for the Shakers in their medicine business. The message on the card reads, "Things are moving pretty lively here. We have four guests, Expect to have ten or more over Sunday to hear Dr. Harnish speak. I must away so good by in love. Your sister Lillian."
