Basket
Field basket, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
Description
Black ash splint with circular base and a circular, split rim with crossed lashing. Half-round rim. Uprights measure 1" wide, and weavers are 1/4". Raised base with weavers in a circular pattern, and split upright in the center, 7" in diameter. Double grip "ear" handles, double-notched, attached on the exterior, and are likely machine-made.
Notes
The basket was owned by, and acquired from, the Mount Lebanon Shakers, but is more likely to have been made by the Taghkanic community of basket-makers, also based in Columbia County.
