Planer, Wood
Machine used to slice poplar into veneer pieces, Canterbury, NH
Description
A machine of wood and metal used to slice veneer from frozen billets of poplar. A sliding wooden carriage held billet of aspen vertically by means of a toothed iron mounted on an iron slide activated by a wooden handle. The carriage was moved forward, putting the billet in contact with an iron plate corresponding to the sole of a bench plane. This sole and its associated planing iron moved up and down on two vertical rods. Power was supplied from below to reciprocate this planer. On the down stroke, the plane iron sliced off a piece of veneer. Then the billet was moved forward as the planer moved by upward and the cycle repeated.
