Woven wool square, Canterbury, NH

Object ID:
1952.4858.1
Community:
New Hampshire, Canterbury
Description

Rectangular piece of woven wool. Background is tan. Design in brown squares 3/8" x 3/8", every other one solid brown in color, and others brown with some pale brown background woven through. Edge is stitched with blue wool. A 1/2" wide brown/tan fringe around cloth.

Notes

Tentatively identified as a handkerchief, but this seems unlikely given the size and composition of the piece, as well as the fringed edges. Given the inscription this may be the first piece of cloth woven by a young Shaker sister, or perhaps the inscription was added later and the piece had some other significance.
